Everyone is always excited to get their permits when they turn 16 and then eventually their driver’s license, but many people usually only ever think of the positive sides of driving and not the negative. The truth of the matter is that when someone is driving, no matter how safe or good of a driver they may be, there is still the chance that they could get to an accident because someone else was not paying attention. For this reason, it is important  for someone to know how to act in the event that they do get into a car accident. Here’s a few tips.

Stay Calm and Collected

When you get into a car accident, chances are that you are going to be shaken up about it and that is completely normal. Anyone would be. Perhaps you were in a car that just rolled. That’s really scary. If you are able to get out of the car, by all means, get out. Be careful not to hurt yourself or anyone else, because you can’t be sure if there is any broken glass around or not. When you get out of the car, you probably will want to turn your hazard lights on so that people know you were in a wreck. Call the police or 9-1-1 so that you can get someone dispatched to help you out. Remain calm and ask the other driver if he or she is okay. This is common courtesy and will be greatly appreciated. Do not get annoyed with the other driver. Accidents happen to everyone.

Most people in the United States can say that at some point in time or another, they have been involved in a car accident. Car accidents are not uncommon and no matter how good of a driver someone is, he or she can still be involved, even if it is not their fault. When a car accident happens, the driver may feel a range of different feelings such as panic, guilt or fear. He or she may not know what to do but the main thing is to always stay calm. It will make the whole situation less stressful.

Calming Yourself

If you find yourself extremely upset right after you have been in a car accident, whether or not it was your fault, the best thing for you to do is to stay calm. You will not want to flip out on someone or start crying because it won’t do you any good. Take a deep breath and count to ten so you can calm yourself down. Being calm is the best way to deal with the situation at hand. Once you feel like you are calmed down and you won’t pop a nutty on anyone, you can get out of the car and assess the damage to both your car and the other party’s car. Decide whether the accident was minor or major and whether or not you think you will need to call the police or a tow truck to take your vehicle.

What Else You Should Do

Once you are out of the car and you have decided whether or not you are going to call the police, it would be a good idea for you to get a piece of paper and a pen and exchange insurance information as well as contact information with the other person involved in the accident. Do not sit around and play the blame game about whose fault the accident was. Right now, it does not matter. Take your cell phone out and take some pictures of the damage because your insurance company may want to see them. If you did call the police, they will probably arrive soon and want to make a report on what happened. This is okay and may help if the accident was serious. Finally, if you are injured in any way let the police know so that they can get you the proper treatment.

Car accidents do happen, no matter how hard we all try to avoid them. You could be the best driver in the world and be going down the road, paying total attention. If someone in another car is not paying attention though, none of that will matter because they can easily cause an accident. Remember that if you ever get into a car accident, it is very important for you to keep calm through the entire situation and never blame anyone for causing the accident. It will all work itself out if you just keep calm.
